Description
This is part 1 of 12 in a series. In 2017, I decided my goal would be to make one new, full-size illustration each month. This one was for January. It took me much longer than I thought...
My idea was to illustrate the months themselves with a representative gryphon (because they're my favorite) and birth month items. Here I created a great horned owl and grey wolf gryphon and chose garnet, firs, and snowdrops from among the various January birth items. All these things were chosen from my home region, the Pacific Northwest. The sense I wanted to convey in this piece was that of starting fresh at the beginning of a new year. The gryphon is taking off, mid-sunrise, starting its yearly cycle anew.
