After years of waffling, I finally set down hard and finished this painting!  I have initial sketches dating back over two years, the final graphite lines have been finished since last year, and over the past few months, I completed all the rest.  I don't know why I find these paintings so difficult to focus on.  It might be a mix of uncertainty and frustration.  This is the second painting to come from a simple piece I made to test a watercolor postcard.  I find it difficult to make paintings based on something I didn't plan out in the first place.  Still!  I really like the final result here.  It shows my progression as a painter (and as a figure artist) when compared to its sister painting and the original watercolor sketch.

This was a commission from my oma.  She wanted a samurai to match the autumn girl I already painted for her :dummy:

Graphite, watercolor pencil, watercolor, ink, and gel ink on 140 lb. watercolor paper, 9x12"

Since there's so many comments already I'll try to say something different XD I think it fits well with the other piece. As far as doing a commission, I've found the clients already like your stuff, so you dont have to worry about making it extremely perfect. These are pieces to make quickly but still do well on, and personal pieces are good for practicing and improving. So I'm happy you decided to just finish it, cause 2 years is a long time! The less time a project is hanging over you, the better, and the more time you have for new work! :)

I've been trying to keep that in mind for commissions recently.  I think it's a big reason I've finished so many this year XD  I guess I'm just a perfectionist when it comes to making art for someone else.  It's like there's more pressure to perform.  But you're right that I shouldn't have to break down barriers for each commission; I just need to do my level best (as opposed to very best).  Getting this particular painting done after all this time was such an unbelievable relief!

I really enjoy your composition and using the branches for framing, that is very clever! Also your line work and shading is wonderful! Keep up the excellent work!

The only things I think you could improve upon here, is anatomy. His shoulders seem a bit wide, even for this perspective, and his face is slightly uneven. It looks like the right side (our right side) is lower.

Otherwise, everything looks good -- the textures, the colors (especially the colors). I really like what you did with all the dabs of different colors instead of a plain ground color. This is really beautiful work! :clap:

Ah yes, you've found my Achilles heel (aside from background composition, lol), anatomy :shakefist:  I agree with the areas you've noticed (some I tried and tried and just settled on 'good enough' when I was drawing the initial sketches, hah).  I will endeavor to improve in the future.  Thank you for leaving your opinion of my work here!

Thank you so much for leaving such a flattering and also helpful comment!  I never thought about the shadows from the trees on the samurai and you are right: it would be much better if they were present.  I will definitely keep this in mind for future artworks :dance:

Beautiful. You made the branches really detailed to the frame of the picture while you change the yellow to pink in some cooler colors for the leaves. The colors of the picture makes me feel really bright and nice. Keep up the good work : ).

I shall endeavor to do so!  I tried really hard with the framing (last time I did something like this, I just drew branches without thinking), so I'm glad that effort is noticeable!  Thank you for taking the time to leave your opinion :D

That's a really nice perspective you created here.
As the previous commenter just said, the framing of the character is great.

Those two items were things I tried to focus on specifically :D I used an app on my phone to help reference the perspective (Pose Tool 3D) and I drew the branches and painted the forest floor with the intention of bringing a subtle spotlight to the samurai.

Sounds like a great app to use, but you sure succeeded at using the pose in a creative and interesting way !

Thank you so much for this inspiring comment :la: I'm honored you found this painting interesting and really appreciate your pointing out what you like!  Hopefully my oma likes it just as much; she had to wait quite a while (just like with the last painting I did for her, d'oh!) and I want her to feel the wait was worth it ^^;
